Borregaard increases production of bio-based vanillin

The market for bio-based vanillin is growing rapidly. This trend is expected to continue and most likely be reinforced in parallel with the world’s growing sustainability focus. In response to growing demand Borregaard is increasing the production capacity for wood-based vanillin.

Work to expand the capacity has started, and parts of the increase will be realised already before the end of 2019.

“This expansion delivers at least 250 new tonnes annually of sustainable bio-based vanillin into the market”, says Executive Vice President for Borregaard Ingredients Bjørn Erik Amundsen.

The vanillin expansion project has a total cost of NOK 130 million and will be completed in the first half of 2021.

Borregaard is the world’s largest producer of bio-based vanillin and the only producer of vanillin made from wood. The company has been producing wood-based vanillin in Norway since 1962. The vanillin, which is sold globally, is used in the food, beverage and cosmetics industry.
