Development of sustainable bio-based adhesives for wood panels

Replacing oil-based chemicals with bio-based alternatives is, besides reducing formaldehyde emissions, one of the main objectives for adhesives and wood panels industries.

Lignin, tannin, protein and carbohydrates are the main renewable raw materials study for development of  sustainable adhesives.

This article published in the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC Adv., 2017, 7, 38604) reviews chemical structure, availability and research done on technical performance of different bio-based systems that can be used as sustainable alternatives to existing formaldehyde-based resins. Lignin and other materials were carefully tested to compare their potential as sustainable alternatives and the article shows pros and cons of using one or another.
