OVER 40 YEARS OF LEARNING AND JOB SATISFACTION AT BORREGAARD

Kristin Kristiansen began as an apprentice at Borregaard in 1983. Today, she works as a laboratory technician at Borregaard’s research centre in Sarpsborg. She reflects on a career marked by professional development, a sense of ownership in her work, and strong collegial bonds.

A Career of Growth and Direction

– I started in the Bleaching Plant and completed my trade certificate as a process operator. Later, I also worked on the Drying Machine, which gave me experience from various parts of the biorefinery. It was exciting to contribute to the operation of such a large and complex production process, says Kristin.

Early in her career, she already had the desire to develop further. Before starting her apprenticeship in processing, she had completed a one-year course in laboratory studies – which sparked her interest in lab work. She carried this background with her, and when the opportunity arose, she applied to join the Research Department’s laboratory in 1989. That marked the beginning of a new chapter.

– I quickly faced new challenges and later earned my trade certificate in laboratory science as well. It meant a lot to be able to further develop my expertise here at Borregaard.

Varied and Meaningful Workdays

Today, Kristin works on development projects within cellulose – including pilot-scale cooking and bleaching, as well as following up on factory trials.

– The field is constantly evolving, and I like that no two days are ever quite the same. The projects are varied, and I enjoy working at the intersection of research, production, and market. It’s meaningful to be part of the entire value chain – from idea to finished product, she emphasises.

Ownership and Security Over Time

With over 40 years at Borregaard, Kristin has both witnessed and contributed to the company’s evolution. She describes a workplace that allows room for growth over time.

– I’ve been able to take ownership of my work and have been part of important product development processes. That brings both pride and motivation. At the same time, I’ve always experienced Borregaard as a secure and stable employer, with a strong focus on people and professional quality.

A Strong Professional Environment and Great Colleagues

The positive working environment is a key reason why she has stayed with the company for so long.

– It’s the colleagues who make it easy to come to work. We have a strong professional community and a culture of bringing out the best in one another. Experience and expertise are valued here, and there’s always something new to learn – no matter how long you’ve been here."

Opportunities for a Lifetime

Borregaard has given Kristin the opportunity to grow throughout her career – from apprentice to experienced specialist.

– I’ve been able to build competence, try out different roles, and grow professionally throughout my career. It means a lot to be in a place where you develop continuously, while also having the security of a solid employer, she concludes.
