Additives for Paints & Coatings
Borregaard offers bio-based, sustainable and innovative thickeners and dispersants for multiple water-based paint, ink and coating systems.
Borregaard's Exilva® Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) is a 100% bio-based and infinitely sustainable, multifunctional low shear thickener with minimal impact on mid and high shear.
Exilva can help customers solve typical technical challenges related to formulating waterborne coatings and replace current synthetic additives to reduce the CO2 footprint and increase bio-based content in their products. These challenges include:
- Mud-cracking
- Sedimentation
- Settling
- Syneresis
- Sag & levelling
- Low strength
- Low shear viscosity
In addition to the technical benefits, Exilva enables to increase the commercial and competitive value of the coatings by impacting the applicability, drying and final properties of the coating. By applying Exilva into the formulation, one can apply one thick layer instead of two layers, without any fear of sagging, mud cracking nor slow drying. This can be turned into higher productivity and savings in manpower.
Borregaard’s sustainable dispersants are used in a wide range of applications to modify the rheology of aqueous systems for both organic and inorganic pigments, like carbon black, iron oxides and titanium dioxide.
Our lignin biopolymers help you increase milling efficiency and solids loading of water-based systems. These bio-based dispersants control the rheology of your pigments for paint systems and inks for textile printing. They offer good viscosity control by modifying dispersion rheology when used alone or in combination with other dispersants.
Our products and solutions for paints & coatings
Exilva microfibrillated cellulose
Borregaard’s exilva® f is a microfibrillated cellulose, produced from norway spruce. exilva® f, a bio-based and multifunctional product made of cellulose, consisting of fibres with lateral dimensions in the nanoscale and lengths up to micron scale.
Advanced bioethanol
Borregaard is a large producer of advanced iscc certified bioethanol. advanced ethanol is defined as fuel produced from non-food biomass.

No viscosity loss upon tinting and excellent sag resistance without sacrificing levelling.
Protective coatings
Improved sag resistance for spray applied coatings
Wood coatings
Improved mud-crack resistance and longer open-time.
Barrier coating
Food contact approved, sustainable and multifunctional additive for improving the performance of water based dispersion barrier coatings.
Pigments
Bio-based aqueous dispersants for dyes and pigments, including carbon black, that will help you increase milling efficiency and loading while reducing initial viscosity.
Sustainability
Norway spruce – a unique raw material
Borregaard operates the world’s most advanced biorefinery, and our most important raw material is wood, more specifically, norway spruce harvested from certified forests with short transport routes.
Sustainable sourcing
The sourcing of our goods and services and supplier interaction must be conducted in a proper manner, taking all three pillars of sustainability, people, planet and profit, into account.
Products with documented low footprints
Our products have documented low climate footprints and provide better environmental performance than the alternatives in almost all environmental categories.
