De-agglomeration of Carbon Nanotubes

Efficient dispersion of conductive carbon is essential for ensuring uniform electrode composition and optimising battery performance. Vanisperse LI is a powerful dispersant for a wide range of carbon materials used in lithium-ion battery electrodes, including high-surface-area carbon black and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In addition to its high performance, Vanisperse LI offers a uniquely sustainable alternative to petroleum-derived additives.

What challenges are associated with dispersing CNTs in water?

There are two main challenges:

  1. Stability of CNTs in water. Physical interlocking or entanglement among CNTs
  2. CNTs in water tend to agglomerate due to strong hydrophobic interactions

How does Vanisperse LI address the challenge of dispersing CNTs in water?

By dissolving Vanisperse LI in water containing CNTs, the dispersant minimises carbon-to-carbon interactions, creating a stable dispersion of individual carbon nanostructures and effectively preventing re-agglomeration.

Can CNT suspensions with Vanisperse LI be stored long-term?

Definitely.  When CNTs are dispersed with Vanisperse LI into individual entities or small agglomerates, they remain suspended in water for an extended period, as shown in the image to the right.

As demonstrated in the video below, the suspension with Vanisperse LI effectively stabilises and disperses carbon nanotubes in water, in contrast to the untreated CNT suspension, which readily agglomerates.
