CROP PROTECTION CO-FORMULANTS
Better stabilisation of advanced formulations
Suspo-emulsions (SEs) and emulsions in water (EWs) formulations are technically demanding and require ingredients that stabilise both the emulsion and suspension components simultaneously. They require co-formulants that are compatible with different oil types, tolerant to impurities and able to keep the formulation stable over time.
KEY CHALLENGES
- Prevent phase separation and maintain stability of both dispersed phases in SE formulations
- Maintain emulsion stability and minimise oil-droplet coalescence during storage
- Minimise Ostwald ripening
One ingredient, two functions
A stable SE or EW formulation depends on co-formulants that can stabilise the emulsion and disperse the suspension at the same time. Borregaard's biopolymers with reduced hydrophilicity do exactly that: they act as emulsion stabilisers and SC dispersants providing stabilisation for both phases of an SE system.
Vanisperse® CB, Ufoxane® 3A, Ultrazine® NA and Greensperse® S7 are well suited for SE and EW formulations thanks to their good performance in both EW and SC systems.
Emulsion formation under high shear
Biopolymers aid emulsion formation during high-shear processing, ensuring narrow oil droplet distribution.
Coalescence prevention
Once formed, biopolymers prevent oil droplets from coalescing, thereby maintaining emulsion integrity throughout storage and application.
SC dispersant
Biopolymers disperse and stabilise the solid active ingredient in the SE formulation.
Performance data in SE systems
To demonstrate the performance of lignin-based biopolymers, both emulsion droplet size and suspension stability were tested in a combined formulation of sunflower oil EW and Chlorothalonil SC stabilised with Vanisperse CB.

Figure 1: Particle size after storage at 40°C
Emulsion droplet size remains constant throughout accelerated storage, confirming that the emulsion does not coalesce over time.

Figure 2: Suspension stability after mixing (0 / 16 / 32 days)
The suspension rheology remains stable on accelerated storage at 40ºC confirming that the solid actives remain well dispersed over time.
