Borrechel
Bio-based complexed micronutrients for efficient nutrient delivery
Borrechel is a range of lignin-complexed micronutrients designed to support nutrient availability and uptake across foliar and fertigation applications. Derived from renewable wood-based raw materials, Borrechel combines agronomic performance with sustainability benefits, helping growers and fertilizer manufacturers meet the evolving demands of modern agriculture.
Why choose Borrechel?
Borrechel micronutrients are complexed with lignosulfonic acid, a naturally derived complexing agent that helps maintain micronutrient availability while supporting efficient uptake by plants. Designed for foliar and fertigation applications, Borrechel combines agronomic performance with the benefits of a bio-based solution.
>90% complexed micronutrients
High levels of complexed micronutrients help ensure nutrient availability and performance
Stable from pH 2-9
Optimized complexation helps maintain micronutrient stability across a broad pH range
Foliar & fertigation applications
Suitable for a wide range of crop nutrition programs
Organic carbon & sulfur
Provides additional agronomic value alongside micronutrient nutrition
Higher foliar iron levels than EDTA
Field trials conducted by IRTA in Spain demonstrated that Borrechel Fe maintained higher foliar iron levels than EDTA-complexed iron throughout the growing season. Two foliar applications delivering 0.20 kg Fe/ha resulted in sustained iron uptake, with elevated foliar iron levels maintained up to 69 days after application.
Key findings
- Higher foliar iron levels than untreated plants
- Higher foliar iron levels than EDTA-complexed iron
- Sustained iron uptake up to 69 days after application
- Long-lasting nutrient availability throughout the season
High levels of complexed micronutrients
The Borrechel range meets the minimum content of 5% soluble microelement and complies with the minimum of 80% complex fraction according to EU REC 2003/2003 and EN 15962:2011 standards.
Depending on the formulation, Borrechel contains up to 11–12% micronutrients, is fully water-soluble and provides a minimum complexation rate of 90%.
Key findings
- Borrechel products fulfil the requirements of EU REC 2003/2003
- Minimum 90% complexation rate
- Fully water-soluble formulations
- Stable across a pH range of 2–9
- Micronutrient content up to 11–12%, depending on formulation
Improved uptake across multiple crops
Studies in citrus, peach and tomato demonstrated that Borrechel micronutrients can match or exceed the performance of conventional alternatives. The lignin-based complexing system combines surface activity with hygroscopic properties, helping nutrients remain soluble and available for uptake after application.

Key takeaways
- Improved nutrient uptake across multiple crops
- Comparable or superior performance versus EDTA
- Surface-active properties support leaf coverage
- Hygroscopic behaviour helps maintain nutrient availability
- Long-lasting nutritional effect after application
Improved crop response under alkaline conditions
Field demonstrations in Andalusia, Spain, evaluated Borrechel Fe under alkaline soil conditions with high iron demand. Applied weekly through drip irrigation over a 16-week period, Borrechel Fe provided similar micronutrient uptake to EDTA while increasing tomato yield.
Key takeaways
- The study demonstrated a 5.7% yield increase using Borrechel Fe versus EDTA
- Borrechel Fe provided similar micronutrient uptake to synthetic chelates under alkaline soil conditions
- Applied through weekly fertigation over a 16-week period
- Provides additional organic matter, supporting plant growth and yield
Borrechel micronutrients
Borrechel is a range of micronutrients, including iron, copper, manganese and zinc, as well as multi-micronutrient formulations, complexed with lignosulfonic acid.
Designed for foliar application and fertigation, Borrechel helps maintain micronutrient availability and supports efficient nutrient uptake throughout the growing season. The soluble lignin component also contributes organic carbon and sulfur, providing additional agronomic value beyond micronutrient nutrition.
Available solutions include iron, copper, manganese, zinc and multi-micronutrient formulations tailored to different crop nutrition requirements.
