Ammonium lignosulfonate is a good alternative to phenol in novolac phenolic resins as it is synthesised and cured at acidic pH. The article describes how to replace 30% phenol with ammonium lignosulfonate in the synthesis of novolac phenolic resin for textile felt bonding.
Replacement of phenol with ammonium lignosulfonate in the synthesis of a novolac resin to obtain a sustainable lignin-based textile felt binder with properties like that of commercial novolac resins.
Parameters measured in lignin-based novolac resins were within specifications required for textile felt applications.
