Borregaard’s chrome-free BioDrill® TM mud thinners de-flocculate water-based bentonite clay systems, reducing low shear rate viscosity and gel strength.

Mud Thinners
Borregaard BioDrill TM thinners are effective in contaminant-rich water-based drilling systems where proper deflocculation is critical to achieving optimal drilling efficiency.
The products also contribute to reducing fluid loss. Our mud thinners have proven efficiency in various environments including freshwater, brackish water and seawater systems at bottom hole temperatures up to 120°C (250°F).
Our mud thinner benefits:
FUNCTION WITH CONTAMINANTS
- Calcium and magnesium-tolerant
- Salt tolerance: Can be used in freshwater, brackish water and seawater
EASE OF USE
- Wide operating range of pH alkalinities
- Most effective at pH levels above 9
- Solubilises readily in water
EFFECT ON VISCOSITY
- Secondary product function: reduces fluid-loss.
The BioDrill products are part of the OSPAR List of Substances Used and Discharged Offshore, which are Considered to Pose Little or No Risk to the Environment (PLONOR)
BioDrill TM100 is a contaminant-tolerant potassium lignosulfonate drilling mud dispersant. By virtue of its potassium content, it efficiently inhibits swelling in water-sensitive shales. When drilling water-sensitive shale formations, shale hydration and swelling may lead to wellbore instability. You can avoid this by employing our potassium-containing mud thinner, where the potassium ions adsorb onto the clay surface and stabilise the shale and inhibit swelling.
High-temperature gelation is also minimised, and fluid loss control is assisted. BioDrill TM100 can be used in fresh water, brackish water and seawater at temperatures up to 250°F (120°C).
BioDrill TM200 is a contaminant-tolerant chrome-free iron lignosulfonate dispersant and deflocculant for water-based mud systems. It’s effective over a wide range of pH alkalinities, particularly at pH levels above 9, and you can employ it in freshwater, brackish water and seawater at temperatures up to 212°F (100°C). BioDrill TM200 is tolerant of calcium and magnesium contaminants and beneficial for drilling muds used for shallow depth wells (spud muds).
BioDrill TM300 is a temperature-stable and contaminant-tolerant chrome-free iron lignosulfonate dispersant and deflocculant for water-based mud systems. It’s effective over a wide range of pH alkalinities, particularly at pH levels above 9, and it also functions to reduce fluid-loss. You can employ BioDrill TM300 in freshwater, brackish water and seawater at temperatures up to 250°F (120°C) and it’s tolerant of calcium and magnesium contaminants.
