Fabric Softeners & laundry Care:
Stabilisation & fragrance performance

Fragrance & Stability Challenges

Modern fabric softeners and laundry care formulations must deliver consistent stability and long-lasting fragrance – even under low surfactant conditions. Fragrance microcapsules must remain suspended and attach efficiently to fabric, without separation, sedimentation, or loss of effect while maintaining the right viscosity.

Today’s lifestyles mean our clothes stay cleaner for longer – but scent still plays a vital role. Consumers now equate fragrance with freshness, using it as a key signal of cleanliness. That’s why long-lasting, memorable scents are more than just a nice touch – they’re essential to product appeal and brand loyalty.

Encapsulated fragrances are today widely used to increase the amount of fragrance retained on the fabric compared to standard technologies. However, one of the challenges is to maintain those capsules homogeneously dispersed in the formulation as well as maximise the capsule retention on the fabric to assure an optimal consumer experience.

Natural Solution for Fragrance & Stability

Exilva offers improved stability and longer-lasting fragrance in fabric care applications. Its fibrillated cellulose structure physically stabilises microcapsules and enhances their retention on fabric for prolonged scent release. In addition, its unique rheological properties provide easy handling, smooth pourability, and a non-stringy texture – improving both manufacturing and end-user experience.

Exilva is a natural and biodegradable ingredient with a very low carbon footprint, obtained from wood sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian forests1, helping you meet tomorrow's sustainability expectations.

Microcapsules stabilisation results

Formulations containing 0.15% Exilva showed improved suspension of fragrance capsules over 2 months of storage. End-use performance showed enhanced fragrance intensity and retention on cotton fabrics compared to formulations without Exilva.

A 5% ester-quat fabric softener formulation with fragrance microcapsules after 2 months of storage.
By including 0.15% Exilva, microcapsule sedimentation was completely prevented.
