Climate friendly products
Through a unique biorefinery concept, Borregaard produces green alternatives to oil-based products.
Borregaard, in partnership with Østfold Research, have carried out a life cycle analysis (LCA) of the products cellulose, ethanol, lignin and vanillin. The life cycle analysis is a "cradle to grave" analysis which provides an overview of the impact on the climate connected with the products, and is based on a precise mapping of process and internal flows.
The life cycle analysis looks at relevant environmental and health impacts throughout the entire production process and material cycle. The analysis lays the foundation for environmental declaration of the products (EPD) and helps customers to choose the most environmentally friendly solutions.
Small CO2 footprint
A competitor analysis has also been carried out, where Borregaard's products were compared to competing products with regard to greenhouse emissions from a life cycle perspective. Here, Borregaard's products come out extremely well, especially when compared with alternatives produced from fossil raw materials such as ethanol from ethylene and vanillin from guaiacol. Here, the difference is considerable.
CO2 emissions connected with Borregaard's EuroVanillin Supreme are 90 percent lower than the emissions connected with vanillin based on guaiacol (petrochemical raw material). Borregaard's bioethanol has emissions 80 per cent lower than those connected with diesel.
If emissions from the use phase are also included, the results become even better. Borregaard's timber-based bioproducts release no emissions since the raw materials are renewable, whereas the fossil alternatives release CO2 emissions in the use phase.
