Borregaard's production system is a biorefinery in which the various constituent parts of the wood are utilised for different products. The fibres become advanced grades of specialty cellulose that are developed for the production of new materials and new applications in foodstuffs. The binding material within wood, lignin, is the raw material for products within the construction sector, for other industrial applications, for agriculture and fishing. Wood is also a raw material for vanillin flavouring, which we alone produce from timber. Our yeast products are used in foodstuffs and are produced from the sugars that the wood contains.

Borregaard is currently in the process of building up an impressive biochemical resource centre. Researchers and technology experts are joining forces with leading research communities around the world with the aim of further developing Borregaard's biorefinery concept.
